Authorities believe 21-year-old Patrick Crucius wrote racist text opposing mass immigration before opening fire last weekend at an El Paso Walmart. Crucius lived near Dallas, and El Paso police say he drove more than 10 hours to the mostly Latino border town in Texas to carry out the shooting spree that killed 22 people and wounded about 22 others. He is accused of murder.

Chris Ayers, the Dallas-based attorney for Crucius’ family, told The Associated Press in an email that they had never heard Crucius express the kind of racist and anti-immigrant views he allegedly posted online.
