“When we simply cut calories without training, we reduce our lean tissue, not necessarily our body fat,” explains Luke. “This may lead to a reduction in overall size, but not an improvement in composition.” In layman’s terms, your back fat may be reduced, but it’s still there – the goal is to convert it by reducing body fat and preserving lean tissue for the hue.
Luke adds: “If we do strength training without thinking about diet, we can become stronger, but any kind of aesthetic change is unlikely. Likewise, if we cut calories too severely or in our daily routine without enough protein in the diet, we risk losing hard-earned lean tissue.”

Luke says the diet and lifestyle changes above should be a priority (calorie deficit + more protein + resistance training). Once these are in order, “we can improve the aesthetics of specific areas by increasing the amount of strength training we do to the muscles,” he says. “It is important to understand that the exercises themselves do not burn body fat, but they create muscle tone that can manifest when body fat is reduced through dietary and lifestyle changes.”
